Heaven’s Prayer Meeting

by Harold Vaughan

Did you know that prayer is taking place in Heaven right now? Not symbolic prayer. Not poetic language. But real intercession — in the very throne room of God.

Scripture declares that Jesus ‘ever lives to make intercession’ for us (Hebrews 7:25). The risen Christ is not inactive. He is not distant. He is representing, advocating,… praying.

And the Holy Spirit? Romans 8:26 tells us that “the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.” This is supplication without syllables.

Think about that.

  • The Son is interceding.
  • The Spirit is interceding.

There is, in a real sense, Trinitarian prayer — communion and intercession flowing within the Godhead itself. Heaven has a prayer meeting in progress.

What Is Prayer?

Intercession on earth is not informing God of something He does not know. It is not persuading Him to do what He is reluctant to do. Intercession is when our hearts and minds come into alignment with the heart and mind of God.

  • God has desires.
  • God has designs.
  • God has plans.

Prayer is not about bending His will toward ours — it is about bending our will toward His.

This is why worship is so vital. Worship aligns the soul. It lifts us above self-interest and tunes our affections to Heaven’s frequency. When our souls are aligned through worship, we are positioned to pray: “Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:10)

  • His will.
  • His kingdom.
  • His glory.

The Purpose of Prayer

The ultimate purpose of prayer is not personal comfort or material increase. It is this: To implement the will of God on earth and to defeat the works of the devil.

When Heaven’s intercession finds agreement on earth, God’s purposes advance. Darkness is pushed back. Strongholds weaken. The kingdom of God moves forward.

Yes, Jesus is praying, and so is the Holy Spirit. If intercessory prayer is happening in Heaven, how much more should it be happening on earth? If two members of the Trinity are engaged in intercession, what about us?

Perhaps our greatest deficiency is not strategy, talent, or organization — but participation in Heaven’s prayer meeting. Like the disciples we should cry out, “Lord, teach us to pray” (Luke 11:1). Brothers and sisters, let us get our hearts in tune and join with heaven’s prayer meeting which is already underway.

“Lord, bring us into agreement with your heart and mind so we may intelligently pray—‘Your will be done on earth as in heaven.’”
